Gardens Without Plants?

DIY home gardening

Do Gardens Need Plants? Well according to  almost every dictionary definition the answer must be yes

A plot of land used for the cultivation of flowers, vegetables, herbs, or fruit.
Grounds laid out with flowers, trees, and ornamental shrubs and used for recreation or display. Often used in the plural: public gardens; a botanical garden.
A fertile, well-cultivated region.

These are just a few of the many definitions, but could these be out of date? Why do gardens need plants?

Over the last 30 years, demand for building land has increased, land prices have exploded and so consequently, gardens have got smaller.

In this time, peoples’ expectations have changed and they demand bigger, brighter homes with more living space and larger rooms.

When you have a 4-5 bed detached house on a pocket handkerchief sized plot, the garden you are left with, is often no bigger than the lounge or drawing room.

]]>

So why not treat this space like any other room?

There are some fabulous outside wooden and wicker style 3 piece suites with water proof cushions, which a few years ago would have cost a small mortgage, but are now very affordable and are sold in many DIY and garden super stores.

Dining furniture has come a long way from those horrible white plastic tables and chairs our parents owned and even outside cooking facilities have come of age with some gas BBQ’s offering more  cooking options than a standard kitchen hob.

People are even building entire outside fireplaces with remote control gas fires and chimneys.

You can clad old fencing in timber to give a modern architectural feel.  You can even render boundary walls to look like plastered internal walls.  These can then be painted in colours to compliment the internal decoration of the house.

You can now buy water and UV resistant canvas photographs,  which can be hung outside all year round to create an external gallery, a perfect solution, for that  dull side ally where your windows look out onto a boring fence or wall.

The outside space can be further furnished and decorating with pots and sculpture.  Running water can be added to help mask background street noise and garden lighting can transform the space into an outside night-time oasis.

People equate plants to maintenance! Remove plants from the equation and you can furnish and decorate your outside room in exactly the same way as you would any other room and by doing so add to the living environment of your home.

Garden Sheds Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

DIY home gardening

Article by Francesca Post

Sheds are often thought of as the non-residential building at the bottom of the garden or the allotment. They can contain a variety of items that can’t find a place in the home, such as: empty flower pots, old tins of paint, bicycles and garden tools. General sheds, or garden sheds are usually small and made out of wood. They come in a variety of sizes as DIY kits, or for the adventurous, there are shed plans if the shed is to be built from scratch. Small sheds can either be; a corner shed, for example: 3′ high x 3′ wide x 2′ deep, a vertical shed, for example: 5′ high x 3′ wide x 4′ deep, or a horizontal shed, for example 3′ high x 5′ wide x 4′ deep.

Larger sheds are available to hold bigger pieces of equipment: ride-on lawn mowers, quad bikes, and motorbikes. A larger shed tends to come with more options, such as: windows and electrical outlets, porches, verandas and sliding doors, as well as decorative additions, for example: window shutters and flower boxes. Larger sheds can be ideal if space is short in the home; they can be converted into an office, a playroom or a hobby room, etc.

Sheds can also be bought for specific uses: a gardening shed can have skylights as well as windows, to increase natural illumination to benefit the plants, ventilation, and a work surface. A potting shed is ideal for the serious gardener as it has large windows; so the shed can double up as part-greenhouse. This feature is especially popular for gardeners who do not have room for a greenhouse and a shed in their garden.

A tool shed is generally very slim, and windowless to keep the tools hidden from sight. They contain shelves, racks and hooks to help keep the tools tidy.

Bicycle/bike sheds are often low constructions and are ideal for protecting bikes from the weather and burglars. Small bike sheds can be attached to a wall or concrete floor to stop the whole shed being lifted! Wide doors make it convient to maneuver bikes in and out of the shed.

Boat sheds is something not usually seen in the garden! But this is useful if there is a river at the bottom of the garden and a small boat and boating accessories need securing.

All sheds should be fitted with a good quality lock, and an effective way of securing windows is to fit an internal grill or bars. A security light near the shed can also increase the security of the shed.

There are different types of materials used to construct sheds. Wood is the most common material. Wooden sheds can blend into the garden or stand out as an attractive addition to the garden. To protect the wood from the elements, termites, mould and damp, a good wood finisher is needed to prolong the life of the shed.

Plastic sheds are made from heavy moulded plastics, such as: PVC and polyethylene, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are durable, will not degrade and hardly need any maintenance.

Metal sheds tend to be used when long-term strength is needed. Not only do the sheds come in different shapes and sizes, but there are different types of metal to chose from: such as, enamel coated steel, vinyl coated steel and plain steel. Metal sheds tend to only be used for storage rather then being converted into an office etc, because they’re very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer.

Whatever reason you need a shed – there will be a shed that will suit your needs.

Choosing Garden Metal Fencing For Style And Practicality

DIY home gardening

Metal fencing is chosen for its practicality and beauty. There are two types of metal garden fences. It can be put and decided in a very short time, so it is ideal for creating temporary housing. Link fencing has a wide range of applications used in schools, playgrounds, parks and industrial areas and home gardens.

The second type of metal fencing looks decorative garden fence. This is a hard and long, and ranges from the development of the design of wrought iron railings functional park. Traditionally, wrought fence was built on the site and it was very difficult. Today, light alloy panels are used which, when painted, looks the same, but are resistant to corrosion – and much easier to build.

Decorative metal can be built independently or mounted on top of the wall. Most people today are choosing the latter, lower costs and because it is more in line with modern houses and smaller gardens. You can buy adequate fencing and metal road barrier, which seems very prestigious indeed.

Many people who buy a fence from us at Wickes DIY seek advice from their local park, and combine the two fences, ornamental and chain link on their properties. Decorative ironwork is used in areas that are visible, such as garden and wire fence kept out of sight of areas in need of high-level security – for example, at the bottom of the rear garden.

wire fences are ideal for creating a reliable barrier against animals and other unwanted intrusions into areas where the fence panels aesthetics are not necessary. You’ll need to dig holes and cement fence posts on the site, but after that it is relatively easy. After the vine, etc. begin to grow, the fence becomes invisible, but 100% privacy and security.

Today, there are many types of chain link fences in different sizes and thicknesses. As heavy galvanized, buy a silver or light synthetic garden fences metal coating that is sufficiently attractive for the exhibition – for example, to separate from the playground or garden.

decorative garden fencing is available in several styles, and are usually sold in 6 foot lengths. The height of the most popular of 2 to 3 feet, which is attached to a low brick or stone walls are equipped with columns on a regular basis. However, it is possible to buy a height of 6 feet or more, with vertical handles that cannot scale.

If you like the idea, but the potential dangers of the spear-point of the ramp then buy in Kensington. Less severe than the Victorian era, it has a short spear (the poles dog supposedly), concluded by appealing arches. If you prefer a more striking appearance, Chelsea, decoration, garden style wrought iron around the house as a feature, as the surrounding garden.
